Scale Brushes

RED's Stretch Properties window sets the size of the selected brushes. RED+ adds a percentage box and Scale each brush individually, which scales every selected brush about its own centre instead of stretching the selection as one piece.

Where to find it

  1. Switch to Brush mode (Shift+B) and select the brushes.
  2. Click Stretch under Brush Operations. The Stretch Properties window opens.

RED+ adds these below RED's own size boxes:

  • Scale (%): a percentage, 100 when the window opens
  • Apply
  • Scale each brush individually, cleared each time the window opens
  • a line under it that says what the checkbox does: Scales the selection together. or Keeps each brush's centre in place.

Scaling by a percentage

  1. Type a percentage in Scale (%):. 50 halves the selection, 200 doubles it, and decimals such as 125.5 work.
  2. Click Apply. RED+ multiplies all three sizes by the percentage and RED shows the result in the views. The box goes back to 100, and the size boxes show the new size.
  3. Apply another percentage to scale again, starting from the new size.
  4. Click OK. A percentage you typed but did not apply is applied first.

The percentage must be a number above zero. If the result would put any of the three sizes outside the range RED's stretch allows, RED+ says so and changes none of them.

Scale each brush individually

  • Cleared: RED stretches the selection as one piece, as it does without RED+.
  • Ticked: each selected brush is scaled about the centre of its own bounding box. The centres stay where they are, so the distances between the brushes' centres do not change. Brushes of different sizes each get the same percentage of their own size.

The checkbox works only in Brush mode. In other modes it is greyed.

Changing the checkbox updates the result in the views without applying the percentage a second time.

Typing a size

The size boxes start at the size of the whole selection. The scale on each axis is the size in its box divided by that starting size. With Scale each brush individually ticked, each brush is scaled by that amount on that axis, about its own centre, so the boxes then no longer match the outer size of the selection.

Different amounts on different axes follow the world axes, also for a rotated brush.

Good to know

  • Cancel puts the brushes back as they were when the window opened.
  • After OK, Edit, Undo (Ctrl+Z) reverses the whole stretch in one step.
  • Brushes that are not selected do not change.
  • Rebuild the geometry afterwards (Space). See Rebuild Geometry.
